Departmental Learning Goals and Objectives

 
Goal I: Students will be able to communicate effectively.
 
Objective 1: Be able to generate memos, reports, written, oral and through technology.
 
  Measurement:  Memo assignment in INST 275 and grade C or better in COMM 304 and COMM 330
 
Objective 2: Be able to locate information, gather data and manage databases.
 
  Measurement:  Database assignment in PPA 320 or project in PPA 490.
 
Objective 3: Be able to present information and data in models, tables, diagrams, drawings and other forms.
 
  Measurement: Assignment with raw data in PPA 415.
 
Objective 4: Be able to participate effectively in group and team processes.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of one teambuilding exercise in PPA 476.
 
Objective 5: Be able to demonstrate skills in personal interaction.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of two interpersonal skill-building exercises in PPA 476.
 
Objective 6: Be able to use information and technology in an ethical manner by, for example, demonstrating an understanding of plagiarism, using citations correctly.
 
  Measurement: 
 
Objective 7: Be able to organize and defend an argument.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of Issue Paper Assignment in PPA 340 with grade of C or better.

 
Goal II: Students will acquire critical thinking skills.
 
Objective 1: Will have a general knowledge of human accomplishments in mathematics, art, humanities, and the behavioral and social sciences.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of General Education requirements.
 
Objective 2: Will have a general knowledge of statistical techniques and an understanding the limitations of statistics and data collection methods.
 
  Measurement: Completion of PPA 415
 
Objective 3: Will be able to explain the scientific process and demonstrate problem solving using the process.
 
  Measurement: Assignment in PPA 415.
 
Objective 4: Will be able to define information needs and evaluate the merit of information.
 
  Measurement: Completion of PPA 320.
 
Objective 5: Will be able to structure problems and develop alternatives for practical action.
 
  Measurement: Assignment in PPA 340.

 
Goal III: Students will understand the context of Public Administration.
 
Objective 1: Will demonstrate a knowledge of the history of public administration.
 
  Measurement:  Essay in PPA 400.
 
Objective 2: Will be able to discuss career paths and develop skills relevant to pursuing them.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of career exercise worksheet in INST 275.
 
Objective 3: Be able to explain the political processes of the US.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of PPA 340.
 
Objective 4: Be able to demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to a diverse public in the way individuals are treated in regard to gender, race, culture, class and sexual orientation
 
  Measurement:  Diversity assignment in PPA 476.
 
Objective 5: Be able to describe the ethical philosophies and the ethical dilemmas inherent in American Public Administration.
 
  Measurement:  Ethics assignment in INST 275.

 
Goal IV: Acquire skills and core competencies in the discipline.
 
Objective 1: Develop a capital or program budget
 
  Measurement:  Completion of PPA 478.
 
Objective 2: Understand the stages and processes of policy making.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of PPA 340.
 
Objective 3: Demonstrate understanding of the supervisory process.
 
  Measurement:  Assignment in PPA 400.
 
Objective 4: Be able to define the public interest.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of PPA 340.
 
Objective 5: Demonstrate the ability to manage the human resources of an organization.
 
  Measurement:  Completion of PPA 476.
 
Objective 6: Be able to plan for organization and/or community needs.
 
  Measurement:  Senior Seminar Exercise
 
Objective 7: Utilize statistics in the management of organizational resources.
