Mission Outcomes Assessment Faculty Student Work

Departmental Learning Goals and Objectives

GOAL I: (Knowledge) All students will have an operational knowledge in the principal areas of physics. (Assessment Plan: Starting during the Winter of 2005 – Final exams for PHYS 222 will be collected for analysis of student knowledge and problem solving skills. The selected course will rotate each year to assess these objectives.)

Objective 1: Students will successfully complete and demonstrate a proficiency in courses that develop the fundamental areas of physics including mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics.

Objective 2: Students will be able to demonstrate an increased skill level in collecting, analyzing, and presenting data and drawing appropriate conclusions.

Objective 3: Students will demonstrate proficiency in the methods of scientific inquiry, laboratory methods, and modern computational methods.

Objective 4: Students will develop their skills in critical thinking and problem solving, allowing them to formulate and solve quantitative problems.

GOAL II: (Communication) All students will develop the necessary skills to effectively communicate their scientific knowledge.

Objective 1: Students will be able to write a well-organized, logical, scientifically sound report. (Assessment plan: Reports will be collected from PHYS 324 and PHYS 307 every time they are taught until 2008 and these reports will be analyzed to see if this goal was achieved.)

Objective 2: Students will be able to present a well-organized and scientifically sound oral presentation on a topic in physics or an application of physics. (Assessment. Plan: Rubric will be developed so that all physics profs will rate student presentations and this data will be collected for all students as part of PHYS 490 (Senior Seminar) for analysis in 2009)

GOAL III: (Career) Students will be provided with adequate preparation for career paths leading to graduate school, industry, education and other professional roles.

Objective 1: Students will be encouraged to pursue research experiences both on and off campus. (Assessment Plan: The Department will maintain records of all research experiences students participate in each year.)

Objective 2: Faculty in the department will provide strong personalized advising, allowing students to make informed post-graduation career decisions. (Student perceptions and satisfaction with advising will be measured using the graduate exit questionnaire and possibly student interviews collected by PACT.)
