Program Learning Goals and Objectives
 
GOAL I: To communicate effectively in Spanish, both orally and in writing, and to think independently in a logical and rational manner.
 
Objective A: To perform at an appropriate American Council for Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) level in reading.
 
Objective B: To perform at an appropriate ACTFL level in speaking.
 
Objective C: To perform at an appropriate ACTFL level in listening.
 
Objective D: To perform at an appropriate ACTFL level in writing.
 
Objective E: To express ideas lucidly through frequent written assignments, including grammar, translation and interpretation exercises, compositions and term papers.


GOAL II: To acquire appropriate cultural awareness and understanding.
 
Objective A: To identify, describe and explain the culture of Spain and compare or contrast it with other cultures.
 
Objective B: To identify, describe and explain the culture of Spanish America and compare or contrast it with other cultures.
 
Objective C: To identify, describe and explain the culture of Mexico and Mexican-Americans and compare or contrast it with other cultures.


GOAL III: To develop an understanding and knowledge of Spanish-language literature.
 
Objective A: To be exposed to major authors and literary currents of Spanish Literature.
 
Objective B: To be exposed to major authors and literary currents of Spanish-American Literature.


GOAL IV: To develop an awareness of both verbal and nonverbal functions of the Spanish language.
 
Objective A: To identify and explain major aspects of Spanish phonology.
 
Objective B: To identify and explain major aspects of Spanish morphology.
 
Objective C: To identify and explain major aspects of Spanish syntax.
 
Objective D: To explain the history and evolution of the Spanish language.
 
Objective E: To explain the social linguistic aspects of the Spanish language.
