Mission Statement:
The program seeks to give Spanish majors a broad background in
Spanish-language literature, as well as a background in
language, linguistics and culture. Upon graduation, our students
will be prepared to teach language- literature- and/or
culture-based curricula that encourage independent reading and
writing, thus exposing their own learners to significant
literary, linguistic and cultural achievements of Hispanic
societies through the ages. Students will also be prepared to
continue their studies at a graduate level, or to enter the work
force in fields requiring Spanish language skills.
Learning a language includes acquiring the ability to
communicate at an appropriate ACTFL level in a variety of
contexts and to construct texts use them appropriately. Majors
experience a broad range of literary and other cultural
information and are asked to integrate reading, speaking,
listening and writing activities as part of their course work.
The program’s goals are the development in the students
of the abilities listed below. To achieve these goals students
will meet the following specific objectives during their course
work and studies'
