Mission Statement: Economics is the study of scarcity
and of how societies organize the production and distribution of
goods and services. Knowledge of economics can make a
significant contribution to citizenship, cultural and
intellectual development, and career preparation. Economics is
an analytical discipline that reinforces skills such as
determining decision trade-offs, making logical deductions and
statistical inferences, collecting and analyzing data, and
drawing policy implications.
The undergraduate degrees in economics offer a flexible coherent
curriculum to enable students to apply the “economic approach”
to solving complex social and business problems. Students will
understand the complexity of economic systems and organizations
and learn the essential theories and analytical tools to solving
these problems. In addition to a broad education with emphasis
on problem solving, the major prepares students to do graduate
work in economics (if they complete the calculus sequence or
minor in mathematics), law, and business and to enter careers in
business, government, and teaching.
