Course Goals
By taking this course, you will:
- 1. Develop a clear understanding of the traditions, culture, role, and importance of higher education and how it figures into your long-term personal mission.
- 2. Acquire knowledge for academic success, including technical skills and information literacy.
- 3. Gain knowledge of CSUB and an understanding of how to access academic support services.
- 4. Become familiar with university policies and regulations.
- 5. Begin the process of increasing awareness of, and appreciation for, diverse cultures, values, and belief systems.
- 6. Become meaningfully involved in university life through connection and engagement with other students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- 7. Participate in the shared academic experience of a common reader.
- 8. Take an active responsibility for your own education by planning for future personal success at CSUB.
Course Objectives
After taking this course, you should be able to:
- 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of CSUB and the Bakersfield/Kern county community.
- 2. Describe the differences between high school and university cultures and the new responsibilities you must assume as a college student.
- 3. Describe the differences between high school and university organizational structures and how to utilize them.
- 4. Demonstrate an improvement in technical and academic skills (such as note-taking, critical reading, writing, speaking and thinking, problem solving, and presentation skills)
- 5. Demonstrate the ability to identify and articulate the benefits of appropriate campus resources
- 6. Demonstrate the ability to locate and access campus resources (physical location, hours of operation)
- 7. Demonstrate the ability to locate sources of the appropriate policies and regulations
- 8. Demonstrate an understanding of your rights and responsibilities as a member of the CSUB community
- 9. Demonstrate an awareness of your own culture, values, and belief systems
- 10. Demonstrate a respect for diverse points-of-view and the ability to engage in civil discourse
- 11. Understand the options available for campus engagement through clubs and organizations
- 12. Recognize the opportunities for leadership and community service during your college career
- 13. Through the Runner Reader Program, engage in a community-wide experiential exercise in civil discourse on a timely topic
- 14. Demonstrate the value of the lifelong practice of reading to broaden one’s horizons
- 15. Demonstrate an understanding of the General Education pattern at CSUB (i.e., American Institutions, Areas, Themes)
- 16. Understand the need for lower-division prerequisites in your major
- 17. Demonstrate an understanding of the necessity of completing remediation courses and how successful completion impacts collegiate-level course performance
- 18. Develop a plan for the completion of remediation and general education requirements in the first two years
- 19. Develop a plan for exploring majors, if undecided
