In its role as a comprehensive, regional public university, California State University, Bakersfield, aspires to be the educational and intellectual center for southern San Joaquin Valley. Its mission is guided by the principles of excellence and diversity. First and foremost, the faculty, staff, and administration of CSUB are committed to seek excellence in teaching. In addition, CSUB is committed to seek excellence in scholarship and service in order to provide an active learning environment. CSUB recognizes its responsibility to contribute to the needs of the public it serves and to the quality of life in its region. (1997)

Mission Statement


The School of Business and Public Administration provides educational programs in business, public administration and nonprofit management – complemented by applied research and instructional development – to serve our diverse student body. We prepare graduates to make knowledge-based decisions to address challenging issues facing organizational leaders in our region and global environment.

Mission Statement


School of Education Theme (Adopted January 2006)

The mission of the School of Education is to strengthen the foundations of democracy and equal educational opportunity through quality programs which prepare committed education professionals and counselors in the context of a linguistically and culturally pluralistic society.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the School of Education has as its basis confluent education that perceives learning as the merging of cognitive, affective, social, and psychomotor domains. This belief underscores the premise that education nurtures and promotes intellectual growth and the emotional, social, and physical well being of all students with a special focus on diversity and equity.

GOALS

These goals provide a direction for implementing the philosophy of educating the whole person:
 
  •  Formulate a comprehensive view of human growth and development, a global knowledge of self and others, and an empathy and sensitivity to multiple realities of a changing environment
 
•  Develop a commitment and responsibility to democratic and social values through professional collaboration, educational leadership, and collegial partnerships
 
•  Promote critical inquiry through research and practice in order to improve teaching, learning and communication
 
•  Broaden knowledge and skill bases in terms of pedagogical multicultural principles conducive for effective curriculum delivery and instruction in diverse settings
 
•  Utilize and integrate various current multimedia resources and technological tools to enhance teaching and learning in the ever-changing society
Apply multiple methods of assessment with a special focus on critical reflection and self-analysis for continual professional development and on-going program evaluation.
 
 

 


School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Mission Statement

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences will achieve its mission in educating students and enhancing faculty professional development through accomplishing the following goals and objectives:
 
Respect

Our primary and most important outreach effort will be directed toward our current faculty and students. In addition, we will share our message of respect, achievement, and diversity with the region to promote the value of higher education.
 
1.
 
Hold retreats/meetings to build morale, envision the future, and lay groundwork for strategic plan.
2. Establish H&SS Advisory Council, with a community representative for each department.
3. Encourage faculty and students to respect one another’s opinions and value one another’s differences.
4. Recognize and reward the contributions of lecturers.
5. Coordinate faculty and student outreach into area elementary and high schools.
6. Contribute significantly to the accomplishment of the university’s goals.
 
Retaining high quality faculty and preserving a core liberal arts tradition as we develop professional programs in response to regional demands are fundamental tenets upon which the school is founded.
 
1. 3 R's: Recognize, Respect and Reward success when and where it occurs.
2. Promote faculty professional development via more equitable distribution of responsibilities, increased opportunities for individual growth, and timely award of sabbaticals.
  a. Review teaching assignments and publish two-year schedule.
  b. Offer elective courses in areas of faculty’s unique expertise and interest.
  c. Implement assigned time review and award process, including three-year plan for department chairs.
3. Develop measures to ensure appropriate contracts and conditions for lecturers.
 
Achievement

H&SS is a proponent of planned, controlled growth in order to achieve the attendant benefits for both H&SS the region we serve.
 
1. Increase enrollment annually without increasing class size by securing concomitant increase in resources.
2. Secure increase in extramural funding via at least one $50,000 grant per department.
3. Allocate adequate space to expanding programs so faculty may interact professionally with their students, their colleagues, and their community partners.
4. Expand offerings at CSUB/AV to meet student demand and ensure timely completion of degree.
5. Seek more equitable distribution of workload with department and across the school.
6. Provide support for faculty teaching larger numbers of students.
 
Diversity

To attract and retain the best faculty and make the benefits of a university education available to as many qualified students as possible, H&SS seeks expansiveness and inclusiveness in our thinking, our curriculum, and our hiring.
 
1. Vigorously recruit and retain new faculty to broaden the diversity of cultures and perspectives in H&SS.
  a. Advertise in publications targeted for underrepresented candidates.
  b. Attend conferences to recruit outside mainstream.
  d. Promote forgivable loan participation.
  e. Develop, nurture, and sustain relationships with our graduates as they pursue advance degrees.
2. Elevate schools to colleges.
3. Showcase the richness of H&SS through regular advertising, especially in high school and community college newspapers and course schedules.
4. Publish on-line newsletter highlighting key features of H&SS; disseminate to Advisory board and Council of 100.
 
Regularly review these goals and objectives to assess what has been accomplished and what needs to be changed/added.
