How do I add and/or drop my class?

How do I withdraw from courses after Census Day?

Withdrawals from classes after Census Day will be permitted only for serious and compelling reasons and require written approval by the instructors, advisor and Dean/designee of the School of the student's major and will result in a "W" being recorded.

  • If you are not dropping from all of your courses, you need to fill out a Add/Drop Request Form and attach a letter to your school Dean describing why you are dropping the course(s).
  • If you are dropping from all of your courses, you need to fill out a Withdrawal From All Classes Request and attach a letter to your school Dean describing why you are dropping all your courses for the term.
  • If you are dropping from all of your courses due to a medical issue, you need to fill out a Medical Withdrawal Request. You will fill out Part 1 and your physician or licensed healthcare provider will need to complete Part II. After completion of both Part 1 and Part 2, you will submit the request to your school Dean.

Regarding Fall 2017

  • After November 9, 2017, your withdraw from classes for a serious and compelling reason will require a Petition of Exception*.
  • *A Medical Withdraw Request does not need a Petition of Exception.

How do I overload for a semester?

If you wish to enroll in over the maximum allotted units for a semester, you will need to fill out a Overload Petition and turn the completed form to the Arts and Humanities Student Center. Please note that you are not permitted to overload your first semester at CSU Bakersfield.

How can I substitute a class for my degree requirements?

If you are wanting to substitute a course for your major or minor, you will need to discuss the substitution with the Chair of the relevant department you are petitioning for. If approved, the Chair will fill out an Authorization for Substitution or Waiver. The completed and signed form will be submitted to the Arts and Humanities Student Center for processing.

If you want to substitute a course to satisfy a general education requirement, you will need to provide appropriate justification and demonstration of means by which you have acquired the knowledge for that requirement. You will also need to fill out a Petition of Exception and submit the petition to the AIMS office.
