Grapes of Wrath Conference

The Cultural Legacy of The Grapes of Wrath

A conference at CSU Bakersfield: Thurs-Sat, November 6- 8, 2014

Our interdisciplinary conference, The Cultural Legacy of The Grapes of Wrath, is shaping up nicely for November 6-8, 2014.

This is truly an interdisciplinary as well as an international conference. With topics ranging from history and literature to the music of Woody Guthrie and the Civilian Conservation Corps' work in the Sequoia National Forest, our presenters are coming from Tunisia, Slovenia, Japan, as well as the U.S.  CSUB will also be well represented. This list does not even include the prominent scholars who are our keynote speakers: Rick Wartzman, James N. Gregory, Dan Morgan, Peter LaChapelle, Gerald Haslam, Bob Price, and Susan Shillinglaw.

Keynote addresses will be open to the public. CSUB students are invited to attend all events free of charge. Registration for the conference is open on our website devoted to the conference. A revival of the play From Dust Thou Art by Peter Grego directed by Mandy Rees will run the duration of the conference (Nov 6-9).

One of the performances of From Dust Thou Art will feature a brief preview of a newly commissioned opera based on Jerry Stanley's book Children of the Dust Bowl, written and conducted by Paul Phillips, Choral Director at Brown University.

We wish to thank our conference supporter, Klein, DeNatale, Goldner.
