Admission Requirements for First-Time Freshmen

You will qualify for regular admission as a first-time freshman if you meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Are a high school graduate;
  • Have successfully completed, with grades of "C" or better in each course, the comprehensive pattern of college prep subject requirements (see below); and
  • Have a qualified Eligibility Index based on your high school GPA and test scores. The minimum score is also based on your California Residency. See CSUMentor to learn more about the Eligibility Index.

Courses must be completed prior to enrollment in a California State University.

California Residents

The California State University requires that first-time freshmen applicants complete, with grades of C or better, a comprehensive pattern of college preparatory study, including the following:

  • English: 4 years
  • Mathematics: 3 years (Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra)
  • History/Social Science: 2 years (US History and World History or social science)
  • Science: 2 years (including 1 biological science and 1 physical science)
  • Foreign Language: 2 years (in the same language)
  • Visual and Performing Arts: 1 year (Art, Dance, Drama/Theater, or Music)
  • College preparatory electives: 1 year (Electives chosen from the subject areas listed above or other college preparatory courses; may be two semester courses or one year-long course)

Non-California Residents

First-time freshmen applicants for admission to California State University, Bakersfield must have a high school GPA of 3.61 or a minimum Eligibility Index of 3502 (with SAT) or 842 (with ACT).



Application Deadlines

The initial application filing periods for first-time freshmen and transfer applicants are as follows:

  • Fall Quarter:
    October 1 - November 30
    of the previous year
  • Winter Quarter:
    June 1 - 20
    of the previous year
  • Spring Quarter:
    August 1 - 31
    of the previous year
