Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the "Beyond your Major" program. We hope you'll join us for this one-of-a-kind experience.
The "Beyond your Major" project is a brand new job shadowing program, inspired by the AARC's undeclared students in an effort to help them find their passions. Through the program, CSUB students spend one work day shadowing a Bakersfield professional in their field of interest. Students spend the day simply observing the professional's day to day life at work, but also have the opportunity to ask questions of their host as well as other staff they work with to gain a practical understanding of what their desired job is like and what it will take to get there. Students participating in this program may decide after their shadowing experience that they love their proposed field, or they may find that they hate it. Either is okay. The "Beyond your Major" program is not an internship program, but a one day job-shadowing program. However the professional connections students make during their shadowing experience could lead to a internship or employment opportunity.
The "Beyond your Major" project is open to any CSUB student of any major. Some majors may be more difficult to find placements for than others, particularly the medical fields due to legal restrictions and standards. Even in these situations, however, we can create opportunities for you to make unique connections with professionals in your field. An important component of this program is professional development. We require all of our participating students to create a resume and have it crtiqued by staff at CSUB's Center for Community Engagement and Career Education. This is in addition to undergoing a mock interview at the career center as well. This process will prepare students to effectively interact in a professional setting. The only other requirement is to work with the program's advisor, Jessica Shillings, to discuss what career paths or passions you'd like to explore.
