  • Reading Certificate (5 courses)
  • Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential (5 courses)
  • Reading/Literacy Master of Arts Degree (3 courses)

Description of Masters Program

Students must develop proficient levels of literacy to function successfully in today's society. Schools face a multidimensional challenge in accomplishing this goal. The mission of the CSUB Reading/Literacy Graduate Program is to: (a) significantly increase teacher knowledge base regarding reading/literacy, (b) assist educators in meeting the diverse literacy needs of students from varying backgrounds, and (c) continue to design programs to meet the professional needs of educators in our service area.
The required course work includes a series of ten core literacy courses, two research/foundations courses, and a thesis as the culminating activity. Students typically complete the Reading Certificate, Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential and Masters Degree in two years by following the outlined sequence of courses. Fall quarter is the best time to enter the program, but students may enter during the winter quarter with the understanding it will may take longer than two years to complete the program as each course is only offered once a year.
