Children’s Lit class proves popular

“Harry Potter”, “Anne of Green Gables”, “Little Women” and “Catcher in the Rye” are just a few of the great stories that will be explored in a new English course being offered in the winter.

“English 472: The Young Adult Novel” is the name of the course, which is offered as a part of the new minor and certificate in Children’s Literature at CSUB. The proposal for the Children’s Literature minor was passed last year by the Academic Senate.

According to English Professor Glenda Hudson, courses in children’s literature have been offered on campus for several years and have always been very popular. So popular in fact students were requesting more of them. That’s where the idea for the Children’s Lit minor came from.

While the minor is being aimed at undergraduate students, the certificate is offered for post-baccalaureate students. The classes appeal mostly to Liberal Studies, Psychology and, of course English majors, according to Hudson.

There will be four classes offered to complete the minor, with two different courses being offered per year. They will be offered in a regular classroom setting as well as on-line. Hudson says the online courses have been very successful.

“This class has been extremely popukar for several years,” she said, adding students enjoy having a course that reminds them of their youth.

More detailed information on the new Children’s Literature minor will be available at the end of this quarter in the English Department.
