John Travolta drops another bomb in daft ‘Domestic Disturbance’

“He will do anything to protect his family,” according to the plot of the movie, but it should be: He will do anything to bore the audience. John Travolta latest movie “Domestic Disturbance” starts pretty well, but as the movie continues, nothing of interest happens. Frank Morrison (Travolta), an honest boat builder has just divorced his wife. His son Danny (Matthew O’Leary) is a very rebellious and troubled young boy. He has had some minor problems with the local police, but his father always supports him.

Susan Morrison Barnes (Teri Polo), Danny’s mother, marries a rich wealthy philanthropist, Rick Barnes (Vince Vaughn). Danny, who is not happy with this situation, begins to cause a lot of trouble. While fighting with his mother (she is going to have a child with her new husband), he escapes and discovers a terrible secret: his stepfather is not as he appears.

John Travolta, though twice nominated for the Academy Award for his world famous role in “Saturday Night Fever”, and also for his role in Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”, doesn’t do quite so well in this movie. He portrays a man with a lot of money and emotional problems and no experience in crime solving who suddenly becomes an experienced detective, solving a crime that even the police were unable to solve.

His role is simply unbelievable and unconvincing. He starts like a regular guy who just wants to be with his kid and he finishes like Rambo.

Vince Vaughn, famous for his role in Swingers and also for his role in “The Cell” with Jennifer Lopez, is the villain, but a very predictable villain. There is no mystery about him; from the beginning his intentions are clear.

All the characters are poorly developed and one-dimensional. For example: the relation between Susan and her new husband Rick is difficult to understand. First they love each other and suddenly for no apparent reason she suddenly hates him.

The whole movie is painfully slow with an uninteresting and unimaginative plot.

My grade: F
