This past Saturday at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, the CSUB men and womenıs track and field team took part in another meet to build more endurance in cold weather.
³Overall, the team put in a sub-par performance. The meet was very cumbersome and very cold,² said Charlie Craig, track and field head coach. ³However, we are still using these meets as conditioners to help get us in shape for the later part of the season.²
Although not everyone competed above a sub-par level, some of the CSUB athletes still managed to stay hot during the cold weather.
Jermain Spence, competing in his first meet since his injury, maintained stride in the menıs 110-meter high hurdles and the 200-meter dash.
³ Iım coming off an injury, but Iım still running close to the times I had expected to run, so Iım pleased,² he said.
Spence, after hitting nearly every hurdle and almost falling, still managed to place in the top six in the event. He also placed in the top eight in the 200-meter dash.
Stacy Goff stepped up to the plate by stepping out of her usual events to showcase her talents in the 200 and the 400 meters. Surprising to some, but not many, Goff won her heat in the 400 meters with a time of 61.08 and placed second in her heat in the 200 with a time of 26.47.
³I donıt like to lose, so I ran my hardest, and I think I did OK,² said Goff.
With a few sharp turns and a powerful heart, April Burton launched her discus to a provisional mark, taking second in the discus with a throw of 154.5 ft. In that respect, Burton made the Bı standard qualifying mark for the National Collegiate Athletic Association national meet, held in mid-May. Burton also threw the hammer for a provisional qualifying mark of 155.6 ft.
³Burton will be one of the best throwers in the conference this year, and if she continues, next year she will be one of the best throwers in the country,² Craig said.
This Saturday, on St. Patrickıs Day, the Runners will travel to Santa Barbara to compete in the Easter Relays.
