Panetta Institute

Description: Interested in becoming a congressional intern in Washington, D.C? Want to study at the Panetta Institute at California State University, Monterey Bay?
Compensation: Course credit/pay.
The Capital Fellowhsip Program.
Location: Sacramento, CA or Washington D.C.
Deadline to apply: Applications for the Capital Fellows programs are accepted during the application period (generally, October through February) for the following fellowship year.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a four-year college degree in any area and be at least 20 years old by September 1, 2006. There are no other requirements.

Description: These programs, known collectively as the Capital Fellows Programs, are nationally recognized. The 18 Assembly Fellows, 18 Senate Fellows, 18 Executive Fellows and 10 Judicial Administration Fellows receive an outstanding opportunity to engage in public service and prepare for future careers, while actively contributing to the development and implementation of public policy in California. The ranks of former fellows and associates include a Justice of the California Supreme Court, members of the United States Congress and the State Legislature, a deputy director of the Peace Corps, corporate executives, and local government and community leaders.

Description: Help a new not-for-profit local organization address issues such as gang violence, racial profiling, teen pregnancy, racial equity, and many more. You will schedule meetings, conduct research, co-ordinate with community programs and local schools, and meet with numerous community members.

Bakersfield Cultural Exchange (BCE).

The Restorative Justice Center

Description: The mission of the Restorative Justice Center is to restore justice in the community through victim offender mediation and restitution services, conflict resolution services, and community dialogues and peace-building forums.

The Kenya Breast Health Programme
Location: Bakersfield, CA and Nairobi, Kenya

Description: Founded by Julia Mulaha (1955-2003), the Kenya Breast Health Programme is dedicated to the awareness of breast cancer in rural Kenya. The programme mobilizes doctors, researchers and policy makers to inform decision-makers about national breast cancer realities faced by Kenyan women. They have extremely limited access to information about breast self-exams, medical facts about breast cancer, and mammogram machines. Only a very few have access to chemotherapy or other means of treatment.
