CSUB Philosophy and Religious Studies Club Newsletter
Newsletter for January 2004
...and yes, I am aware that December was forgotten....
Welcome back everyone to a brand new year. The Philosophy and Religious Studies Club has much in store in the near future. The Film Lovers and Philosophy Society has many good movies coming in the Winter Quarter. Don't forget our Club sponsored event this week, Doug Portmore, California State University Northridge, will be presenting his work at this year's first department colloquium, next Friday, January 16th. Doug will be presenting his work on the problem of whether or not a person can be harmed after his or her death. Look for flyers around campus! Support your club and come to the event.
This quarter we are starting a book discussion group for those interested in modern philosophy. The first book will be Jean-Francois Lyotard's "The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge". For those who are interested in this club event, please contact Co-President Chris Fleming at morpheus75@hotmail.com as he will be setting up the dates and times. For a brief synopsis of the book, travel here. Admittedly, the book is a difficult read, but with enough minds in the same room, there should be some lively discussion!! For more information about the reading group, http://www.csub.edu/philosophy/readgroup/.
The Film Lovers and Philosophy Society is scheduled to have a first meeting on January 23rd in the Business Development Center. The showing will begin at 7:00 P.M. give or take a few minutes. First up, Lars von Trier's "Breaking the Waves", a difficult film to watch, but rich in philosophical and religious ideas. For more information regarding the film and it's contents, please travel to the CSUB Film Lovers and Philosophy Society page. Due to the extreme graphic content of this film, please redirect yourselves to the page to check out the warnings.
Tentatively, we will hold the club meetings one to one and a half hours before the Film Lovers and Philosophy Society meetings or immediately following the film. That way, we can all get together for some discussion and camaraderie. If there are any ideas or suggestions, feel free to email either Chris or bob, we are listening!
Due to extreme time constraints, our Treasurer has resigned. We appreciated Bobbi's work and wish her well. If there is anyone interested in filling the position, we are in desperate need!!! Contact Dr. Glasgow as soon as possible.
That's about it for this month's newsletter... I would like to welcome the new members to come to one of the colloquium talks, the discussion groups on film or the book discussion meeting. This is your club, come out and support it.

Blurb for December and beyond... Actually, this is a blurb for life....
...procrastinate now, don't put it off for later....
