Message from the Chair

Welcome to CSUB's Mathematics Department.  The Mathematics Department at CSUB offers a B.S. in mathematics with 4 possible tracks, in addition to minors in mathematics and applied statistics.  The 4 tracks for the bachelor's degree are applied mathematics, statistics, theoretical mathematics, and teaching mathematics, the latter including a teaching credential in single subject matter preparation in mathematics and a blended option, which allows the student to graduate in 4 yeas with a B.S. in mathematics AND a single subject credential.  The mathematics department also has an M.A. in the teaching of mathematics.

Faculty members in the department are recipients of 3 outstanding professor awards, 2 faculty research awards, and 1 leadership and service award, all university-wide.

One of the program's teaching goals is to help the students discover both the importance and beauty of mathematics by combining lectures with discussions, problem solving laboratories, student presentations, and computer experience.  As such, the CSUB mathematics department is one of few nationwide which includes a 140 minute laboratory session in every 5 unit mathematics course.

Upon completion of our major, students are prepared to pursue careers in teaching or industry and are ready for graduate study leading to advanced degrees.  CSUB mathematics majors have gone on to graduate programs such as UC San Diego, UC Davis, University of Maryland, and the University of Washington, to name a few, and are recipients of  numerous distinctions in undergraduate research.

Please feel free to come by my office (SCI III Room 230) if you have any questions about our program, or email me at jtrigos@csub.edu.  In the meantime, please enjoy visiting the rest of our webpage.

Cordially,
Javier Trigos-Arrieta , Chair
