SOCI

SOCI processing begins three weeks before the SOCI are to be sent out to the students. The typical schedule of events is as follows;

Overview

  • ACS generates the Error Report and posts them to the SOCI Website.
  • Time (1 week) is allowed for corrections to be made.
  • ACS prints packet labels and posts the Check List to the SOCI Website.
  • Time (2 weeks) is given for packets to be assembled.
  • The departments distribute the SOCI to the students for evaluation and time is given for them to be returned.
  • The departments pre-process the packets and deliver them to ACS.
  • ACS scans the SOCI and generates the Results Reports and returns them to the departments.
  • The Error Report
The ACS department will generate an Error Report that should be used to identify any problems with the Instructors name, enrollment counts or any thing else that is found. The departments will have 1 week from the time that the report is posted until the packet labels are printed to correct any problems.

    Correcting Errors
It is the department responsibility to download and review the Error Report and make any corrections that are needed.

    Printing Packet Labels
The packet labels are printed in the ACS department and and distributed. Now the departments can begin assembling the SOCI packets. It is important the the professors/lecturers give their students the poper instructions for filling out the SOCI. If you have any questions as to the proper instructions please call Duane Jorges at extension 2468.

    Check List
Use the Check List to identify which courses have had packets sent out for them as well as which courses have had their packets returned. The column labeled CRN can assists you in finding the team taught courses.

    Pre-Processing SOCI Packets
After the departments have received all of the packets back from the students, there are a few steps that need to be taken prior to delivering the packets to ACS. If these steps are not followed your batch of packets may be returned to you so that you may correct the oversight.

  • Go through each packet and remove any extra papers such as instructions, paper clips, pencils etc.
  • Remove any stray pencil marks on the back of the SOCI, this could invalidate the SOCI.
  • Verify that all SOCI are filled out using #2 pencil only. The scanner does not read ink.
  • Verify that the CRN is bubble-in correctly on each SOCI.
  • Verify that the "Instructor Code" is blank for all Courses that were not "Team Taught" If anything is bubled-in for the "Instructor Code" and the course is not team taught, then the SOCI is invalid and will not be processed. If the course is team taught and nothing is bubbled-in, then the results will be assigned to one person instead of all the professors/lecturers.
  • Verify that all SOCI are facing the same direction.
  • Remove any blank SOCI - these will not be processed
  • Deliver the SOCI to the ACS department by the appropriate delivery date. (See "SOCI Website")
  • Scanning SOCI
The batch of SOCI need to be delivered to the ACS department in one group. The ACS department will scan all of the SOCI and generate Result Reports for the SOCI that were successfully processed.

All SOCI packets must be delivered to the ACS Department five days before finals week begins. Any packets that arrive after this point will be processed after the on-time packets are processed.

    SOCI Instructions

    Faculty responsibility for SOCI:
You must appoint a student to administer the SOCI to the class. Inform the student of the CRN for the course, this is the 5 digit number located on the first line of the label on the packet. It would be helpful to write this number on the board. If this was not a team taught course then inform the student that the "Instructor Code" on the top of the SOCI should be left blank. If this was a team taught course then inform the students of your CSUB ID writing it on the board would be helpful. You must leave the room while the students are filling out the SOCI. Please allow a minimum of thirty minutes for the completion of the SOCI. The appointed student will be responsible for collecting the SOCIs and placing them in the packet and returning it. Please emphasize to the student the importance of returning the packet on time..

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students are to fill in the CRN at the top of the form (leave instructor code section blank if this was not a team taught course).

    Returning the Materials (Student Responsibility):
Return the entire packet to appropriate department office. If the office is closed, take the packet to the Walter Steirn Library and place in the SOCI box on the counter.

Keep the entire packet together. Do not fold the SOCI forms. All SOCI forms should face the same direction and be placed back in the original envelope.

The completed SOCI forms will be returned to the instructor only after their grades have been turned in to the Records Office. There is no way that your SOCI comments can influence an instructor pro or con for this quarter.
