Computer Virus
Because of the recent and widespread outbreak of a computer virus, this seems an appropriate time to remind all campus computer users to keep their computers (especially computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems) updated with both the latest operating system patches and virus updates.

Operating System Updates/patches for Windows
This can be accomplished by going to the Windows Update site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and apply any critical updates.

Anti-virus Updates
Once Windows is updated, run your antivirus software and scan all files. The software should automatically clean any infected files. If you find a virus that can not be cleaned with your current software you can download a free removal tool, called Stinger, for those special cases at http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp#stinger. If you have any questions or need any help please call the Help Desk at x2307.

Tips To Avoid Computer Virus Infection

  1. Make sure you use the latest campus antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you are unsure if your antivirus software is up to date or have any questions regarding your antivirus software, contact the Help Desk at x2307.
  2. Make sure to keep up to date on the critical updates from Microsoft for your Windows operating system.
  3. Be aware of and do not click on readme.exe files.
  4. Set your computer to view file extensions. Do not click on any email attachment that displays an .exe, a .bat, a .vbs, a .pif, or a .com file, unless you are expecting this particular file.
  5. Never open email attachments from someone you don't know and be suspicious of email attachments from someone you do know but weren't expecting mail from.
