New Voice Mail: Frequently Asked Questions II

Q: I discarded a message in error. Can I retrieve the discarded message?

A: Be sure to be very careful when you decide to discard a message, once you have discarded a message it is gone and cannot be retrieved. If you press 4 before you have completely listened to the message, the system will assume you do not really want to discard the message and ask you to press 4 again to confirm this action or to press 1 to continue listening to the current message.

Note: If you just press 4 then 4 again, you might be discarding the next message. Be sure to wait for the prompt asking you to press 4 again.

Q: Why can I sometimes press ** to exit the voice mail system and other times I have to press * several times?

A: When you press the * key, voice mail stops what it's currently doing and plays the previous voice menu options. If you are really into the menu, you must press the * key once for each of the previous menu options.

Note: The star key enables you to move quickly from one function to another. When you want to exit voice mail, press the * key enough times until you hear the prompt that states "Thank you calling". This will free the line more quickly for the next person.

Q: Do I always have to listen to the prompts or wait for them to start before pressing a key?

A: Once you become familiar with the functions you use most often, you can quickly access a particular feature by entering the key sequences without waiting for the voice instructions.

Q: I find there is a lot of high frequency noise added and a lot of fidelity lost that was not notable on the old system. Can anything be done?

A: This really is not a voice mail problem. If you are not using the phone furnished by the campus, it could be causing your audio problems or the problem could be with the phone system itself. If you are using a campus furnished phone and experiencing audio problems, please call the Telecommunications Department at X3200.
