UPDATE ON FIRSTCLASS

Since the first of September, several things have been done to improve the service and reliability of FirstClass. Early in the quarter the response time was very slow. In the past, this problem had been attributed to too many users and the presence of another software package related to mail (the gateway) on the same server. However, the number of users was NOT the main problem. On the FirstClass server, e-mail had been set to a very low priority. When the priority was up-graded, an immediate improvement in response time occurred. Since then we have been able to provide faster FirstClass e-mail service to more users then ever before. In addition, the gateway was moved to another server to provide even more resources to the FirstClass server and to prepare for the future growth in the number of users.

One problem that had been occurring periodically was with the "out-going-mail" service. Large mail messages would cause the software to "jam". The problem was identified to the software vendor, and over the weekend of October 25, a new release of the gateway software was installed. FirstClass will continue to be monitored to ensure that the problem has been fixed and to provide reliable and dependable e-mail service.
