FAQs on Office 98 for the Mac
Q: I currently have a MAC 6400 Performa at home. Would I be able to use MS Office 98 on it?
A: Yes. We recommend you upgrade your memory to allow the program to run at a useful speed.
Note: "Pass this on if anyone's shy about putting Office '98
on an older PPC. Despite the recommendations for at least 120 MHz, Office
98 works swimmingly on older PowerPCs. It's just about as fast on my office
7500/100 as it is on my G3/266 at home."
Q: I don't intend to install Office 98 at this time. I downloaded the "installer" attachment so I can convert files as needed. How do I do the installation? Do I just double-click on the icon and it puts everything in the right place, or do I need to know something else? When it has been installed, does it run in the background (detecting and converting files as needed), or do I need to do something to make it run?
A: The installer does everything for you. The converter will run in the background and you'll notice a status bar at the bottom of your document letting you know its converting. This usually takes around 4 -5 seconds. This won't be any different than converting a Windows document on your Mac.
Note: We've included the converter program in an attachment to
this issue.
Q: Would I qualify to purchase Office 98 for personal and business use?
A: Yes. You can order this (and other software) from Wareforce,
Inc. using a personal credit card. They may require a copy of your Staff
ID to be faxed to them to verify your connection to education for the educational
discount.
Q: This upgrade sounds great, but I have heard that Banner has a real conflict with OS8. If you install this new version of Office does it automatically install system 8.1 and is there still a conflict?
A: There is still a Banner conflict with OS8 and presumably with
8.1, however, you needn't install 8 or 8.1 to use the Office 98 software
-- it works with OS 7.5 (and no, OS 8.1 does not install automatically).
To find out what version of OS you are running, while in Finder (click
on your Desktop) pull down the apple menu and click on "About This Computer..."
Q: Will we be seeing a PC Windows version soon?
A: The MS Office 98 for the Mac is equivalent to, and compatible
with, Windows version of Office 97. MS Office 98 for the Macintosh is also
equivalent to the Office 98 for Windows to be shipped at a future date.
The file converter sent in the previous message will convert Word
97 for Windows files.
