Configure Outlook For FirstClass
Use Outlook to Archvie email
Summarize Selected Messages

This "How To" is a reference for setting up Outlook (as your POP3 client) for the CSUB FirstClass email server. The basic information can be used to set up other POP3 clients (Outlook Express, Eudora, Nescape Messenger, OS X Mail, ect), although the "look" will differ with each client. If you have questions, please call the Help Desk at x2307.

  1. Start Outlook, and on the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  2. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click to select the Add a new E-mail Account option, and then click Next.
  3. In the Server Type dialog box, click POP3.
  4. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, enter the required information:
    • User Information
      • Your Name: (Example: John Doe)
      • E-mail Address: This is your FirstClass address that was assigned to you.
Note: Your e-mail address is your first initial + last name (+ any number appended), @csub.edu. For example, John Doe was assigned a user ID of jdoe3, so his e-mail address would be jdoe3@csub.edu.
      • email-account screen shot
    • Log on Information
      • User ID: the FirstClass ID assigned to you.
      • Password: Use the same password that you have set for your FirstClass account.
      • You can check box to have Outlook remember your e-mail account password if you want Outlook to auto-connect.
    • Server Information
      • For incoming and outgoing server type: firstclass1.csubak.edu
      • Example: John Doe assigned a user ID jdoe3.
Note: You can test the connection between Outlook and the FirstClass server by clicking the Test Account Settings... button. If there is a failure to connect, then there could be a problem with the information entered above, or your FirstClass account is not created, or possibly you do not have a connection to the internet.
  5. Click More Settings
This takes you to the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box, where you can modify your Internet E-mail Account.
  6. General Tab
The General tab is the where you can rename your e-mail account.
    • Mail Account: Type a name for this account.
    • Organization: The name of your company and it is not a required entry.
    • Reply E-mail: This is optional and only used if you want replies to your messages sent to another e-mail address.
  7. Advanced Tab
  8. Attention: The Advanced tab is where you can specify if you want to leave a copy on the FirstClass server, or not.

Check the box to leave a copy on the FirstClass server (this is the most common method). If you are not planning to use the FirstClass client to read your personal email, then leave the Delivery option unchecked. Outlook will ONLY see incoming mail in your Mailbox. Outlook can not see (or affect) the mail in any folder or conference.
