Steve Garza (BA ’02) returned safely in September 2004 from a 20-month tour of duty for the Army Reserves at the Iraq-Kuwait border and proceeded to complete the credential program. He did his student teaching at Shafter High School and then landed a full-time position there, where he is also the assistant varsity boys’ soccer coach.
LeCostel "Lee" Hailey (BA '74; MA '77) died recently from cancer at age 59. He had retired only three years earlier after serving for thirty years with the Kern County Fire Department, most recently as Deputy Chief. He also taught some for Bakersfield College.
Steve Garza works alongside alumnus Jorge Maldonado (BA ’97), who is the coach of the varsity boys’ soccer team, and teaches social studies as well. He is also helping coach the Bakersfield Brigade men’s Professional Development League.
Completing his third year teaching history at Beardsley Junior High School, John Money (BA '03) has two teaching credentials: a Multiple-Subject and a Single-Subject credential. He is now pursuing an MA in educational administration.
Having initially taught history at Liberty H.S., Octavio Patino (BA ‘99) next became Dean at East H.S. Come fall he will be the Asst. Principal at Shafter H.S.
One of the few student assistants to have worked in our department office, Norma Rodriguez (BA '93), a Political Science major, went on to graduate studies at the University of Washington, completing her PhD in 2001. After a teaching stint at CSU Chico, she is now the director of recruitment and diversity at the University of Washington School of Law.
