Summary of History Forum, given on May 12, 2006 by Professor Douglas Dodd, "Celebrating America’s National Monuments: 100 Years of the Antiquities Act, 1906-2006."

A century ago, on June 8, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law a bill entitled “An Act for the Preservation of American Antiquities.” The Antiquities Act—the nation’s first historic preservation law—became a powerful tool for the conservation of natural and cultural resources. The law was the response of the Progressive-era conservation movement to the legacy of loss and destruction that had accompanied the nation’s nineteenth-century mismanagement of public lands. Vivian photoFaculty Profile: Miriam Raub Vivian

Dr. Miriam Raub Vivian has been chair of the history department for the last four years, and has been at CSUB since 1990.  Her personal experience has been formative in directing her towards making a career in history. In a recent interview, she revealed that she is from a family of teachers: “My maternal grandmother taught English for thirty-six years; my paternal granddad was a violin teacher; my mom taught piano and organ; and my dad taught choral music at a community college.” (Click here to read the full story.)

Our Phi Alpha Theta chapter shone once again in April at this year's Southern California Regional Paper Conference, where senior Sharon Gillison took first place in the undergraduate division for her paper on attitudes toward women during the American Depression.  Congratulations. Sharon!
