The National History Honor Society

Fall term has ended, which makes this an excellent time to consider joining Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. If you have a 3.1 GPA or higher in all your CSUB history courses (minimum four)—and an overall GPA of at least a 2.0—then you qualify. See our department web page (www.csub.edu/history), and click on P.A.T for find the online application, which you can email as an attachment to me (mvivian@csub.edu).  If it’s more convenient, there are also red information/application forms in the rack right outside my office (Faculty Towers 304A.)

January is just around the corner, which means it’s almost time once again for our annual chapter paper competition. Applications are going out right now. If you wrote a research paper over the last calendar year (winter, spring, or fall), and earned an A on it, please consider submitting it for the competition. We’ll be awarding cash prizes, thanks to the J.R. Wonderly Memorial Award provided by alumnus Peter Wonderly. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 25. Please read carefully the instructions for submitting your paper.

The Annual Southern California Regional Phi Alpha Theta Student Paper Conference for 2008 will be held at Chapman University in Orange County on Saturday, April 12.  I hope that some of you will plan now to attend. Submitting a research paper to our chapter competition in January is an excellent first step toward participating in the regional conference. If you would like to submit a paper to the spring regional conference, please let me know. This year conference organizers are asking for an early submission for paper abstracts (roughly a paragraph explaining the paper’s thesis and main points as well, perhaps, as providing some information on one’s sources). For more information and to submit an abstract, which is due by December 31, visit http://www1.chapman.edu/PAT/Registration.html. Registration and conference fees are due on the same web site by March 1, 2008. Questions not answered by the web site can be emailed to 2008socalpat@chapman.edu.
