Karyn Barnes (BA ’08) was accepted into the graduate program at Cal State Fullerton to pursue an M.A. in history. She will begin in August 2008. Congratulations, Karyn!
Having taught for only one year at Golden Valley High School, Ruben Carrillo (BA ‘05) has been reassigned for next year to East High School, which offered him a position. Ruben had a good experience at Golden Valley this year, teaching both world history and U.S. history.
Ruben informed us that Anna Knight (BA '05) has been reassigned from Delano to a new high school in Bakersfield: Mira Monte. She taught economics at Delano, but will apparently be teaching English at the new school.
Having earned a law degree after graduating from CSUB, Joel Lueck (BA ‘96) works in the Public Defender's Office here in Bakersfield.
Kenya McCormack (BA '07) has been substitute teaching long term this past year. She will complete the credential program next fall and is currently working part-time at Cal State for the Social Work program.
Sadly, Randall Odom (BA ’03) died on April 23, less than a month before his 46th birthday. Randall was a delightful student: hard working, intelligent, friendly, and grateful for the chance to pursue an education. For the last three years he had been teaching independent study students for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
Jason Plume (BA ‘02) completed his doctoral exams in political science in November 2007 at Syracuse University, making him ABD (all but dissertation). Congratulations, Jason!
Alumnus Oliver Rosales (MA ‘05), currently a PhD student at UC Santa Barbara, will present a paper on "Race and Law Enforcement on California’s Racial Frontier: The Career of Robert B. Powers" at the fall conference of the California Council for the Promotion of History (October 25) in San Luis Obispo. Professor Alicia Rodriquez will chair the session. Oliver has also been awarded a UC California Studies Travel Grant to facilitate work on his doctoral dissertation. Congratulations, Oliver!
Mark Thompson (BA '97) has just completed his tenth year at Ridgeview High School, where he served as department chair for several years. He enjoys teaching some honors courses, but notes that his efforts are as much devoted to classroom management as they are to teaching.
Mathew Zaninovich (BA ‘04) works out of the Delano/McFarland area and is the field supervisor for Jasmine Vineyards, Inc., doing a little bit of everything for this company. Jasmine Vineyards primarily grows table grapes, as well as some almonds. Mathew recently became our very first history library collection patron by donating FIVE books to our library, selected from a list in the winter newsletter drawn up by history faculty. His generous contribution will help improve our Asian history collection. Thanks, Matt!
