Fall History Forum
It looks quite possible that we all three History Forum presentations in 2008-09 will be on Latin America. That likelihood, coupled with our hiring a Latin Americanist, who will also help with a Latin American exhibit at the Todd Madigan Gallery, leads us to dub this next academic year "The Year of Latin America"!

2008 DEPARTMENT AWARD WINNERS
 Clio Award
(to a graduating senior with an exceptional GPA)
A history major and philosophy minor, Madeline Newberry completed her degree in just 3 years earning a cumulative 3.85 GPA while a member of the Hawk Honors Program. She will enter the credential program for elementary education in the fall.

James H. George Scholarship Award
(to a junior with an outstanding academic record and excellent promise in our program)
Celeste Sharpe, also a history major and philosophy minor, will spend fall term studying abroad in Canada.

 Outstanding Graduating Senior
(to the graduating senior with an exceptional level of overall achievement at CSUB)
A member of the Hawk Honors Program with a minor in political science, Ryker Solano earned a roughly A- average through 15 CSUB courses and has nothing less than an A on his transcript over the last year. Ryker was active in the History Club, and plans to pursue a single subject teaching credential next year.

The CSUB History Department Welcomes a New Faculty Member!
 The History Department is pleased to welcome Lia Schraeder to our program as a Lecturer in Latin American history. Currently completing her PhD in Modern Mexican history at UC Davis, Ms. Schraeder will join our department in the fall and will teach a lower-division survey in Latin American history (HIST 240).
Having grown up in rural east San Diego County, Ms. Schraeder completed her BA at UC Santa Barbara before moving to Davis. Click here to read more.

History 240: Survey of Latin American History
"The evolution of Ibero-American societies from ancient Native American cultures through Spanish and Portuguese colonization to nineteenth and twentieth-century nation-states."
This course has not been taught in some years, but we are fortunate to be able to offer it again with the hiring of Lia Schraeder from UC Davis. The course will be held MWF, 10:55am-12:15pm. It is a general education course, fulfilling the Area C-3 requirement, and satisfies the lower-division non-western requirement for the history major. We urge any history majors currently enrolled in HIST 210 (World Civilization I) to enroll in this more narrowly focused course instead.
