Attention History Majors
Good news! Our school dean and university provost have both approved our hiring a Latin Americanist for next year! Her name is Lia Schraeder. We are thus now able to offer a Latin American history survey at the lower-division level in the fall 2008 quarter.
We want to encourage all history majors to consider enrolling in this course.
HIST 240 satisfies both Area C (Gen Ed) and the lower-division non-western requirement for the history degree. With budget cuts and understaffing, we are able to offer only one section of HIST 210 (world civilization I) in the fall, and Liberal Studies students place a huge demand on that course. So, we are asking those of you who still need a non-western lower-division survey for the major to consider HIST 240. If you are currently enrolled in HIST 210, it would be terrific if SOME of you migrated out of that course, which will have no difficulty filling, and into this Latin American survey.
It is a great idea to use your non-western survey requirement to focus your study more narrowly (than in a course such as 210) in a course such as Hist 222 (Modern Pacific Asia, being offered next winter 2009) or HIST 240, which will be offered in fall on MWF from 10:55 am to 12:15 pm.
We expect to be able to offer an upper-division course in Modern Mexico in the winter term. There is more news on this and a revised schedule for 2008-09 in our spring 2008 newsletter.
