Pacific Branch American Historical Association 2009 annual meeting

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Deadline for proposal submissions: January 16, 2009

The Program Committee for the 2009 Pacific Coast Branch-American Historical Association (PCB-AHA) annual meeting to be held on August 6-8, 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, invites proposals for panels and papers on all historical themes and time periods but with special consideration for those that fit with the theme, "Creating and Crossing Borders: Conquest, States, Peoples, Families." Interdisciplinary panels and panels in non-traditional formats (films, posters, roundtables, etc.) are welcomed, as are panels composed of or including graduate students.

The setting of Albuquerque, one of America's oldest and most complex cultural landscapes, encourages reflection on the origins, cultural meanings, and consequences of borders in multi-ethnic communities and states over time. We also understand borders metaphorically to include gendered, racial, and other constructed notions of social categories. Reflections on borders, whether territorial, cultural, or social, benefit from theoretical insights from other disciplines. We thus encourage sessions that are explicitly comparative between regions, nations, time periods, and subfields of history, as well as sessions on pedagogical issues related to the theme.

We accept submissions for sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops, and individual papers. All submissions should be sent by email, with attachments in Word or RTF; please note "Proposed PCB Session (or Paper)" in the subject line. When submitting a session proposal, include an abstract that outlines the purpose of the session and designate one panelist as the contact person. Each paper proposal, whether individual or part of a session, should include a one-page abstract, a one-page c.v., and an address, phone number, and email for each participant. Please indicate audio/visual needs in your proposal. The Program Committee assumes all listed individuals have agreed to participate. The deadline for all submissions is January 16, 2009.
