BASIC SERVICES
The SHS provides basic outpatient medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and subacute conditions, illnesses and injuries. The medical staff is available for routine health care, women’s services, minor surgery and urgent care including basic x-rays, laboratory and pharmacy. Student fees support the facility and provide many basic services, which are available at little or no cost. These include:
- Medical evaluation and counseling for individual health problems
- Laboratory tests needed to evaluate many acute problems
- X-rays needed for skeletal injuries
- Contraception and family planning counseling
- Programs in health education
- Anonymous or confidential HIV testing
- Emergency first aid for injuries on campus
For those services not covered by the mandatory health fee a charge is assessed based on the cost to provide the service. Generally, the cost at the SHS is far lower than the charges assessed off campus. Those augmented services for which there is a fee include:
- Medications
- Physical examinations
- Pap smears
- STD Testing
- Immunizations
- Lab or x-rays required for a class
- Any lab tests sent off campus
- Extended University Students
- Summer visits
- A variety of special lab tests can be done through the Health Center laboratory at a reasonable charge. Such lab specimens are sent to private, off campus laboratory facilities. The student is expected to pay in full at the time of specimen collection.
Complete fee schedule for augmented services are posted in this web site and in the Health Center. Students pay at the time of service with either cash or Runner Bucks.
SERVICES NOT PROVIDED:
The Student Health Center does not provide emergency services of any kind. In addition, it is not the intention of the University or the SHS to provide comprehensive medical care for major problems or long term care of chronic/established medical conditions. Care is not provided for treatment of major illnesses, injuries or accidents that require either hospitalization or long term follow-up. Medical services in this category become the responsibility of the student. No off campus medical visits will be made by Health Center personnel at any time.
AFTER HOURS CARE
There are no after hours care or on-call services available at the CSUB Student Health Service, nor does the Health Center staff provide in-patient hospitalization services. Students should seek after hours and/or emergency care through their private physician or at a local hospital emergency room or urgent care center. All off campus medical care must be obtained at the student's expense.
STUDENT HEALTH OUTREACH TEAM (SHOT)
The Student Health Service actively seeks the input of our consumers, the students of CSUB. The Student Health Outreach Team (SHOT) promotes student awareness of Health Center programs and services, and represents CSUB students on matters of Health Services policy. The mission of SHOT is to aid the Student Health Center in providing the best medical care, health education, and medical resources for students at CSUB.
SHOT actively seeks new membership each Fall. If you have questions about SHOT call Erika Delamar, Health Educator and SHOT Advisor, at (661) 654-3453 or email edelamar@csub.edu
CONFIDENTIALITY
Because of the nature of health care, medical records contain sensitive, privileged information about individuals and their medical information. Other than members of the Health Center staff directly involved in the care of an individual patient, no one may read or receive a copy of any part of a patient's record without the written permission of the patient (except as required by law). No member of the University's management, faculty or staff is entitled to information from any student's medical record without the student's written consent.
INSURANCE
CSUB does not provide medical insurance to students. Therefore, students are encouraged to enroll in an individual medical insurance plan to cover off campus medical care, emergencies and hospitalization. CSUB's Associated Students, Inc., sponsors an insurance plan and can be contacted at (661) 654-2418.
In the Student Health Service you have a right:
- to be treated with dignity and respect;
- to be provided with courteous and considerate care;
