Part-time employment opportunities on and off campus.
Federal Work-Study : Through the Federal Work-Study Program (FWS), eligible undergraduate and graduate students may work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) and earn money to help pay for their educational expenses. Limited funds are awarded to students as part of their financial aid award package, and benefit both the student and the campus. It will:
- Allow the student to gain work experience for their resume.
- Allow the student an opportunity to become better connected to the University.
- Allow the student to work an adjustable schedule around their class load.
- Allow the student to earn money that will not affect their future financial aid eligibility.
- Provide student workers, without budgetary cost to the department, to supplement (not replace) current departmental staffing.
With the assistance of the CSUB Career Development Center (CDC) , the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships has revised its Federal Work-Study hiring procedures, as follows:
For NEW Work-Study placements : The following is a summary of the job placement procedures for students who have accepted a Federal Work-Study award as part of their financial aid award package.
- The hiring department prints a Form 102 - Work Study Hiring Form (from the CDC web site: http://www.csub.edu/cdc/forms.htx ). This form asks for a job description including qualifications, pay rate, start and end date, duties, and application procedures (phone, apply in person, email resume, etc.)
- The hiring department completes and faxes the Form 102 to the CDC, and keeps the original copy.
- The CDC e-mails a confirmation to the department, along with the Rights and Responsibilities of hiring Federal Work Study (FWS) Students information sheet.
- The CDC will post the available jobs on http://www.ecampusrecruiter.com/csub . Interested students may also review the job list in the CDC office.
- A Financial Aid Award letter is sent to the student indicating their Work-Study award. The student is advised to search http://www.ecampusrecruiter.com/csub for job listings under "On-Campus/work study."
- The student makes an appointment to see the Federal Work Study Coordinator to obtain a Form 104 -Work Study Hiring Form (which will indicate the amount of award for the hiring department). (This also allows the Coordinator an opportunity to speak with the student about their interests and the positions advertised, as well as about the America Reads and America Counts tutoring programs and other community service opportunities).
- The student schedules an interview for the job(s) by interacting directly with department.
- The hiring department decides who to hire, and completes the Form 104 - Work Study Hiring Form Section B for the student. The hiring department must provide the signature of both the supervisor and the Department Head/Designee authorized to expend funds, and should maintain a copy of this form for their records.
- The student returns the Form 104 to the Federal Work Study Coordinator for signature in Section A. (This allows the Coordinator to track the placements, and notify CDC via email, at mbutler.csub.edu, to remove the job posting from http://www.ecampusrecruiter.com/csub ).
- The student takes Form 104 to Payroll for final signature, and to complete their payroll documents.
- The student arranges their work schedule with the department and begins work.
- The student follows the new PeopleSoft Student Employee Self-Service Payroll procedures for reporting their Time and Labor (T&L) no later than the 2 nd day of each month.
- The hiring department follows the new PeopleSoft Student Employee Self-Service Payroll procedures for certification of student Time and Labor (T&L) no later than the 5 th day of each month.
- The hiring department and the student are both responsible for ensuring that the student does not earn more than their Work-Study award amount for the academic year. If the student has exhausted their earnings, the department may complete a Form 117 - Student Assistant Transaction form to transfer the student's payroll to departmental Student Assistant funds so the student may continue to work.
For RENEWAL Work-Study placements : If a department employed Federal Work-Study student(s) last academic year, and would like to renew the same student(s) for the next academic year, the department must forward the student(s') name(s), campus ID(s) and when the student(s) will begin work (must be after July 1) to our Federal Work-Study Coordinator as soon as possible. She will generate a Form 104 - Work Study Hiring Form, and forward it to the department to complete. She will do her best to accommodate as many requests as possible based on our available funding.
America Reads/Counts Programs : CSUB also participates in the America Reads/Counts programs, which are federal initiatives that challenge universities to train work-study eligible students to provide tutoring of reading and mathematics to elementary/middle school children performing below grade level. For more information, please contact the Federal Work-Study Coordinator in the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
Student Assistantship (on campus) & part-time (off campus) Employment : Student Assistant employment is also available on campus and eligibility is not based on financial need. Student wages are paid by the hiring department. Part-time, off-campus employment is available to all students as well. Positions are advertised in the CSUB Career Development Center (CDC) located in the Cafeteria Offices building (CAF), phone (661)654-3033.
