Safety & Risk Management

Introduction - Video Display Terminal (VDT)

The computer workstation with the Video Display Terminal (VDT) has revolutionized the workplace. It plays a major role in increasing individual productivity and overall efficiency in any work environment.

Just as the VDT has changed the way many people work, it is becoming increasingly necessary for VDT users to change the way they operate them. Concerns are mounting over the proper and safe use of VDT equipment to prevent injury to the users.

Understanding ergonomics - the science of how people interact with machines and their environment - and applying its principles, can help minimize common VDT health-related injuries.

Proper VDT use, including proper posture and workstation adjustments with careful attention to muscle and eye fatigue, will help prevent musculoskeletal and visual problems. The ergonomic principles presented in the handbook help promote a comfortable, healthy, and efficient VDT work environment.

It is the supervisor's responsibility to ensure that all employees understand and follow these guidelines. Employees are responsible for adjusting their work habits to prevent injury and for monitoring their workstations for any potential problems.
