Message from the Dean

I am happy to welcome you to the School of Arts and Humanities (A&H) at California State University, Bakersfield.

The curriculum and programs in A&H serve both the university and the community.

The School of A&H has over 75 highly-qualified faculty members teaching in seven departments: Art and Art History, Communications, English, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music and Theatre, and Philosophy and Religious Studies. We also house the undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies program. In addition to the majors and minors in all those areas, we also offer subject matter preparation for California Single Subject Teaching Credentials in Art, English, History, Music, and Spanish. Graduate programs are also available in English, History, and Spanish.

The School of Arts and Humanities plays a large role in supporting the university’s General Education program. In fact, many students discover their passion for the Arts and Humanities through General Education courses and develop a major or minor in one of our departments.

The Art, Music, and Theatre programs in A&H regularly offer concerts, exhibitions, and performances for the university and the community. We encourage students to be involved in these activities. The academic programs in A&H also offer an array of student organizations that provide possibilities for deeper involvement and leadership. These are excellent opportunities for students to build a set of skills and experiences that can help prepare students for their professional lives.

The School also houses organizations such as the Institute for Religion, Education, and Public Policy (which explores the diversity of religious belief in our area and the intersection between religion and public policy) and the Public History Institute (which preserves the regional memory of the Southern San Joaquin Valley and, through collaboration with the Walter Stiern Library’s Historical Research Center, provides opportunities for experience working with primary sources).

Like the other schools of the university, A&H has a Student Center embedded in the Dean’s office which offers advising and tutoring assistance. We encourage students to visit the Student Center regularly to take advantage of its resources and assistance.

The academic programs within A&H provide students with broad artistic and humanistic knowledge as well as skills (such as critical thinking, argumentation, and writing) that are useful for a variety of professions.

I encourage you to explore the A&H web pages to find further information about our programs and departments.
