Required Textbooks:

Studying Rhythm: Third Edition by Anne Carothers Hall (available in Runner Bookstore)

Music for Sight Singing: Seventh Edition by Robert W. Ottman and Nancy Rogers (available in Runner Bookstore)

Grading:
There are WEEKLY assignments in some or all of the following disciplines: sight singing, interval recognition, rhythmic training, keyboard skills and dictation.  You will be tested on these assignments EVERY WEEK.  The tests are administered in many ways - here is the breakdown:

Auralia Tests: There will be Auralia Tests this quarter.  Their start dates are still up in the air due to problems with the Computer Music Lab.  The instructor will inform students when these exams begin and all other specifics regarding these exams.

One-on-one testing with the instructor:  The sight singing, rhythmic training and keyboard aspects will be tested individually OUTSIDE of class time. Students will sign-up for an appropriate time block to be tested on the week specific assignment.  The tests will be held on Friday mornings between 9 AM and 11 AM and 2 PM and 3 PM - most likely in an empty practice room.  There will be five (5) of these one-on-one exams throughout the quarter, with each one being worth roughly 60 points.

Take Home Dictation Exams: There will be eight (8) take-home dictation exercises.  Students will turn these in during class time on Thursdays beginning on 4/3.  Here are links to the audio files and prepared manuscript (with key signature, starting note, meter, etc) needed to complete the dictation exercises.  These take-home dictation exams are worth between 30 and 60 points each, depending on the length the excerpt that needs to be notated.

There will be roughly 1000 points possible in Music 224.  The total number of points earned by the student will be divided by the number of points possible to determine a grade.

Note from the instructor:

The material we cover in Music 224 will closely coincide with the material we are covering in Music 222.  The point of the two courses is very simple: Music 222 teaches the theorhetical concepts of music while Music 224 makes sure that the student is able to actually accomplish those concepts on the keyboard and through the human voice.  The two courses are intertwined, and one is much less effective without the other.  Because Music 224 is only a one-unit course does not mean it is somehow "less important" that Music 222.  On the contrary, the Theory Skills cycle is probably the most important group of courses you will take as a music major at CSUB.
