These exercises are designed to help one learn and practice spreadsheet concepts using Microsoft Excel.  Some are sample spreadsheets that you download and modify, some are typical tasks one might have to perform using a spreadsheet.  You can follow different paths in using this material

Spreadsheet Exercise 1
(a) Budget: Basic spreadsheet composition (general version of basic spreadsheet formatting)

This exercise covers basic spreadsheet operations including labels, data, formulas and functions. You will create a six month record of your personal and household expenditures. Using this as a base you will create a column of monthly averages to make an informed guess about the next months expenditures.

After completing the first exercise format your spreadsheet for readability with general formatting including, column width, font style and size, data format etc. To see a formatted spreadsheet similar to the assignment with attached notes on formatting download the following and view in a word processor: (b)  A checkbook balancing spreadsheet (general version of basic spreadsheet functions and formatting)
Using your spreadsheet skills developed in exercise one, develop a spreadsheet version of your checkbook balancing. To see a word version of how your spreadsheet should look (formulas won't show--thats your job!): (c) Personal worth statement (business version of basic spreadsheet functions)

(d) Not part of assignment but can demonstrate if time.  You have a credit card balance of $2500.00 and the interest rate is 11.9% with a minimum payment of  3% of your balance each month.  Assume you just pay the minimum payment, in 10 years how much will you have paid and how much will you still owe?

     (e) NO SAMPLE SPREADSHEET--but there is data check Lets assume you just purchased a car with a cost of $10,000 and an interest rate of 6.5 API calculated monthly.  You are going to pay $250 a month.  Create a spreadsheet that will show your monthly payments interest paid, and balance until the car is paid.  Show on the spreadsheet how much the car really cost with interest.

         (f) NO SAMPLE SPREADSHEET Create a spreadsheet that covers the 4 years of your college education cost.  include tuition.....textbooks (estimate $250 per quarter) and suppose that you don't have to start paying until 1 year after you graduate.  The interest rate is 6%.  Be sure and show what you owe after the 5 years.

        (g) NO SAMPLE SPREADSHEET Gas mileage:  Create a spreadsheet that shows how much it would cost for gas for a 4 week month  if you had to travel to Fresno M-F  for a job. Determine what it would cost if you had any of the following cars Hummer, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota Pris, Honda Civic, your current car. [Find this information on the web] Show the cost differences if the gas price is $1.50 a gallon, $1.75 a gallon, $2.00 a gallon, $2.50 a gallon or $2.75 a gallon.

        (h) NO SAMPLE SPREADSHEET You decide to put the $5 usually spent on a Lotto ticket each week in a savings account you have found that pays 6.5 % API (a really great rate but it's coming). How much would you have in 25 years? How much would you have spent for the Lotto tickets? [An interesting shortcut to use with some interest problems rule of 72]
